ADA Recognizes Diabetes Education Program

The Diabetes Education Program at The Medical Center of Aurora is an outpatient based program for the education of Type I, II and gestational diabetes. The program is awarded Recognition status from the American Diabetes Association (ADA). ADA Recognition assures that the TMCA program offers high-quality self-management education services to patients with diabetes, enabling them to live healthier lives and to minimize life-threatening complications such as kidney disease, stroke, blindness and nerve disease.  Reimbursement from Medicare and Medicaid is allowed with Recognition status.

 Classes offered at TMCA:

• Mondays from 10am to 4pm (with an hour lunch)
• One Saturday a month from 10am to 4pm (with an hour lunch)
• Gestational classes: scheduled on a 1:2 basis
• Spanish speaking classes (including gestational)

**One on one appointments are available upon request

A five-hour class covers the following topics:

• Diagnosis Diabetes
  • What is Diabetes?
  • High and Low Blood Sugar: Sign/Symptoms/Treatments
  • Monitoring Blood Sugar: Self-Blood Glucose Monitoring
  • The Big Picture: HbA1C
• Diabetes Medication and Sick Day Guidelines
• How Food Affects Blood Sugar
• Diabetes and Exercise
• Preventing Diabetes Complications
• How Stress Affect Blood Pressure

Medicare and most other insurance carriers pay for part or all of these classes. Our staff will verify specific coverage and benefits. Please Note: A physician order for Diabetes Self Management Education (DSME) is required for class participation, as well as medical nutrition therapy.
