Breastfeeding Support

We understand the importance of helping new mothers successfully breastfeed their babies. Our Lactation Program offers support while you are in the hospital and then after you go home.

Support in the Hospital

Early breastfeeding is a time for learning, and both mother and baby can benefit from some time with an experienced teacher. Getting off to a good start is the key to successful breastfeeding. Our nurses are excellent resources for getting started with breastfeeding; however, should you need additional support, our Certified Lactation Consultants can assist in the hospital and afterward. They'll help you learn effective positioning techniques, solve problems and guide you over the bumps on the road to success. For inpatient lactation support, call x5812.

Support After You Go Home

At The Medical Center of Aurora, we support breastfeeding mothers - and their babies - even after they've left the hospital. To help new moms with concerns and problems, we offer the Breastfeeding Class. Our lactation consultant provides education in a group setting to help you and your baby become a successful breastfeeding team. Weekly weight checks are taken for your baby. You will be encouraged to trust:

  • Your ability to breastfeed
  • Your body
  • Your maternal judgment

This clinic is for mothers and their babies. Learn how to:

  • Manage postpartum breast engorgement and nipple soreness
  • Latch on and position your baby during feeding
  • Track whether your baby is getting enough to eat
  • Monitor newborn growth and development
  • Pump breast milk successfully

This class is free of charge and no registration is required. Classes are held every Tuesday and Thursday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.
