At The Medical Center of Aurora, our infectious disease doctors treat all forms of infection, including those caused by bacteria, virus, fungus, parasites and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
An infectious disease specialist is an internal medicine doctor with extensive training and knowledge in diagnosing and treating infectious diseases. Their training includes a comprehensive understanding of how the body's immune system works, how infections spread and how to control infection, including the use antibiotics.
Not all patients with infection need to see an infectious disease specialist. If you become seriously ill from infection, your primary doctor may refer you to a specialist. Additionally, if you are hospitalized with a serious infection or if you acquire an infection within the hospital, you will need to see an infectious disease physician.
