Sexual Assault Program

The Medical Center of Aurora is an official provider of the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE) Program. SANE nurses serve an important role in our community. They give victims of sexual assault a safe haven for care. As a result, victims are more willing to report sexual assault crimes and seek prosecution. We are the first hospital in the eastern Denver metro area to provide this service.

A SANE is a professional registered nurse who has:

• Special training and expertise in providing comprehensive and compassionate care to the victims of sexual assault
• Special training and expertise in collecting forensic evidence
• 48 hours of classroom study
• 90 hours of clinical and courtroom training

The SANE program benefits victims, the criminal justice system and the community. At The Medical Center of Aurora we operate within the 18th Judicial District, which includes law enforcement agencies in four counties:

1. Arapahoe
2. Douglas
3. Elbert
4. Lincoln

We provide care for sexual assault victims in an exceptionally supportive environment. Additionally, we strive to help victims cope with a variety of issues. Evidence collected by our trained professionals leads to an increase in prosecution rates and credible, neutral courtroom testimony.
