Aurora, CO, July 18, 2012 – The Medical Center of Aurora has been ranked the #4 hospital in the Denver metro area and the #4 hospital in Colorado as part of the U.S. News & World Report’s 2012-13 Best Hospitals rankings, available online at There are 100 hospitals in the state of Colorado. The hospital has also been recognized for high performance in ten specialties. The Medical Center was recognized last year as the #5 hospital in the Denver metro area, with high performance in eight specialties. The rankings, annually published by U.S. News for the past 23 years, will also be featured in the U.S. News Best Hospitals guidebook, which will be available in August.

The latest rankings showcase 732 hospitals out of about 4,800 hospitals nationwide, covering 100 metro areas and 200 non-metro areas in the U.S. Hospitals that are either nationally ranked or recognized for high performance in at least one specialty are distinguished as Best Regional Hospitals. This year’s Best Regional Hospitals rankings include three levels: state, metro area and other regions.

“We are proud to be recognized as a top Colorado hospital,” said Bill Voloch, Interim CEO and CFO of The Medical Center of Aurora/Centennial Medical Plaza. “As a Magnet hospital, our physicians and employees are dedicated to high quality, compassionate patient care.”

The regional hospital rankings complement the national rankings by including hospitals with solid performance nearly at the level of nationally ranked institutions. The regional rankings are aimed primarily at consumers whose care may not demand the special expertise found only at a nationally ranked Best Hospital or who may not be willing or able to travel long distances for medical care. The U.S. News regional rankings give many such patients and their families more options of hospitals within their community and in their health insurance network.

The Medical Center of Aurora is recognized as high-performing in the following specialties:

  • Cancer
  • Cardiology and Heart Surgery
  • Diabetes and Endocrinology
  • Gastroenterology
  • Geriatrics
  • Nephrology
  • Neurology and Neurosurgery
  • Orthopedics
  • Pulmonology
  • Urology

Solid clinical data plays a central role in these rankings - patient outcomes, processes of care, patient safety, quality performance metrics and other objective data. Reputational scores based on medical specialists’ opinions were also factored in.
